Why Is My 2–3 Year Old Not Talking Yet?

If your two- or three-year-old isn’t talking the way other children are, you’ve probably heard everything — “boys talk late”, “my child spoke at four and is fine”, “just wait”. Meanwhile you’re lying awake wondering if you should be doing something. Let’s clear it up.

What’s typical at this age

As a rough guide (every child varies):

  • By 18 months: around 10–20 words, points to show you things
  • By 2 years: 50+ words and starting to join two together — “more milk”, “daddy go”
  • By 3 years: short sentences, and understood by family most of the time

Common reasons a toddler is slow to talk

  • Late talking (late language emergence): the child understands well and is socially connected, but spoken words are slow. Many — not all — catch up.
  • Hearing problems: frequent ear infections can cause “glue ear”, muffling sound at the very age speech develops. This is common and often missed. (See hearing & speech.)
  • Too few chances to talk: heavy screen time, or everyone anticipating the child’s needs before they ask, gives fewer reasons to use words.
  • An underlying difference: sometimes late talking is an early sign of autism or a wider developmental delay — especially if social communication also seems different.

Reassuring signs vs red flags

Reassuring: your child understands instructions, points, makes eye contact, copies you, and clearly wants to communicate. Worth checking now if your child:

  • Has very few or no words by age 2, or isn’t combining words by 2½–3
  • Doesn’t respond to their name or simple instructions
  • Rarely points, gestures or makes eye contact
  • Had words and then lost them
  • Is hard for family to understand at age 3

What you can do at home today

  • Get face-to-face and name what your child is looking at — narrate the day in short, clear words.
  • Pause and wait — give them a few seconds to fill the gap, instead of jumping in.
  • Offer choices: “milk or water?” so there’s a reason to use a word.
  • Cut background screen time; swap in talking, singing and books.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is my 2 year old not talking yet?

There are many reasons: some children are simply late talkers, while others have hearing issues, limited language exposure, or a developmental delay. A 2-year-old should have some words and try to copy sounds. A hearing test and speech check are good first steps.

Should I worry if my 3 year old still isn’t talking?

By age 3, a child not using short phrases or being very hard to understand does warrant attention. The good news is that this age responds very well to therapy. An assessment can find the reason and start support quickly, so it is worth acting.

Could my toddler not talking be due to hearing problems?

Yes, hearing difficulties, including from frequent ear infections, are a common and treatable cause of delayed speech. A child who hears unclearly struggles to learn words. A simple hearing test is always one of the first things we recommend before anything else.

Does too much screen time stop toddlers from talking?

Heavy screen time can reduce the back-and-forth talk children need to learn language. Screens deliver words but not real conversation. Cutting screen time and adding plenty of face-to-face talking, reading and play often helps. If words still don’t come, seek a speech check.
